GROVELAND, Tuolumne County — Visitors traveling from Groveland toward Yosemite’s quieter Hetch Hetchy area need to plan around a different access schedule than Yosemite Valley.
According to the National Park Service entrance guide, the Hetch Hetchy Road is open to regular vehicle traffic from sunrise to sunset only. Day visitors must exit before sunset, and trailheads are not accessible by road once the entrance is closed.
Vehicle dimensions matter
The park prohibits vehicles or trailers over 25 feet in length and 8 feet in width on Hetch Hetchy Road because it is narrow and winding. Drivers renting motorhomes or towing campers should check both dimensions before choosing this route.
Hetch Hetchy remains part of Yosemite National Park. Standard park entrance fees or valid passes apply. The NPS notes that cash is not accepted at entrance stations. A paid entry does not override road restrictions, closure times or parking limits.
Fall and winter travel conditions
The park warns that between November and March, snow and ice can trigger restrictions, chain requirements or closures. Parking can also fill, particularly around the middle of the day on weekends. It is worth building extra time into the trip rather than expecting to arrive and hike immediately.
Call the park’s road information line at 209-372-0200 and follow its prompts for current conditions. Another official source is Yosemite operating hours and seasonal guidance.
What does this mean for Groveland businesses and guests?
Hotels, vacation rentals and guides serving western Tuolumne County can prevent costly travel mistakes by warning guests about vehicle-size limits and sunset closing times. The most important distinction is that Yosemite overall is open year-round, but this particular road has separate daily and seasonal controls.
Visitors should carry water and appropriate clothing, avoid assuming cell service is available throughout the route and keep track of daylight. No specific day-of opening or closure is asserted here; check the National Park Service before departure.
